AB1802 Research Workshop

Welcome to the workshop space. We have created this section of the web site to encourage and support research focused on the impact of AB 1802 on California school counseling. This resource is available to all. We anticipate that counselor educators, school counselors, school psychologists, school social workers, educational psychologists, college advisors, researchers, graduate students, school district administrators, district directors of student support systems, educational analysts, commentators, and others will find this space useful.

The workshop will grow as people contribute. To begin, we have included some resources and research projects we are familiar with, and in some cases, directly involved with. Our intention is to post carefully. We will look things over, make a careful assessment of the item's usefulness, accuracy, and relevance and post what we conclude will be most helpful. We anticipate that feedback from the field will continuously strengthen the capacity of the workshop space to be helpful.

For the opening of the workshop in 2006, we created four folders for viewers and users to work with. In no way were these four set in concrete. We considered them a first approximation for putting some things out on the workbench in the workshop. For 2007-2008 we have added a fifth folder--Studies Completed--and we hope this folder will be a popular spot for viewers interested in the evidence that the states new investment in school counseling for middle and high school students is making a difference.

Seeking Researchers will be a listing of projects-in-waiting. Here, school site teams, district directors of student support systems, university faculty, and graduate students' may post requests for researchers and/or research partners for AB 1802 related projects. Our hope is that this matching service will facilitate collaborative research projects around the state.

Studies Underway presents summaries of AB 1802 related research projects.  Clearinghouse staff will update this section regularly.

Questions Awaiting Research is our electronic clipboard for keeping track of all those questions that come up when we begin to think deeply about a subject. In this case, the subject is the Middle and High School Supplemental School Counseling portion of AB 1802 and how it impacts the practice of school counseling in California. In general, the subject is how legislation impacts practice in education and how school counseling struggles with its stance as a profession in California in the early 21st century. In this regard, note that good research often begins with tough questions.

Getting started with research -- This folder will help interested counselors, graduate students, and formal researchers fine-tune ideas about research projects. Here, we hope workshop visitors will find useful tips, protocols, procedures, samples, and other items that can help focus an inquiry, meet high standards for validity and reliability and make life a little easier in relationship to thorny issues that come up in research. Visit often as items will be added, modified, expanded, catalogued and linked frequently.
