Ideas-Mart

Ideas-Mart is a kind of marketplace. Counselors all over California are finding creative solutions to the challenges of AB 1802 implementation. Here, we share with you some of these ideas.

  • Our first submission is a wonderful act of solidarity by counselors and counselor educators in Rhode Island. This document compares recent school counseling developments in Rhode Island and California (a seemingly funny comparison given the differences in size between the two states) and discusses the opportunities both states have created for demonstrating school counseling accountability. Thanks to Pat Nailor and Karl Squire of the Rhode Island School Counselor Association (RICSA) for sharing this with us.

  • Creating a Psychology of Success in the Classroom:
    Enhancing Academic Achievement by Systematically
    Promoting Student Self-Esteem

by John V. Shindler, Ph. D.
    Department of Curriculum and Instruction
    California State University, Los Angeles

Here is an interesting analysis from John Shindler, a professor of education at Cal State-Los Angeles, who is the co-director of the Western Alliance for the Study of School Climate, and the developer of the WASSC Climate Assessment Instrument . He is the developer of the internationally used Paragon Learning Style Inventory. His teaching areas include Classroom Management, Instructional Design, Teacher Leadership, and Classroom Assessment. In this essay, he addresses creating what he calls a psychology of success in the classroom. The paper is sub-titled "Enhancing Academic Achievement by Systematically Promoting Student Self-Esteem." Here, we find a good discussion of three decades of research on student self-esteem and academic achievement. This material can be helpful for making the case for counselor work with teachers on classroom and school climate. Some readers will say "I told you so," and others will want to apply these potentially powerful ideas to their work on the Academic Development competencies included in the ASCA National Standards.
